Glossary
RS Rating
A 1-99 score representing a stock's price performance relative to the broader market over the past year. A rating of 90+ means the stock outperformed 90% of all stocks in the universe. Momentum traders look for RS 90+.
ADR% (Average Daily Range)
The average percentage move a stock makes from high to low each day over the past 20 sessions. Used for position sizing and setting realistic stops. A 10% ADR stock needs wider stops than a 2% ADR stock.
ATR$ (Average True Range in dollars)
The dollar amount a stock typically moves per day. Used directly in position sizing: divide your risk amount by ATR$ to get your share count.
Episodic Pivot (EP)
A stock that has just experienced a major catalyst (earnings, FDA approval, partnership, etc.) causing a large price move on high volume. EP traders look for continuation moves in the days/weeks following the catalyst.
Distribution Day
A day when a major index falls on higher volume than the previous day, indicating institutional selling. Multiple distribution days within a 25-day window signal potential market weakness.
Follow-Through Day
After a market correction, a strong gain on higher volume 4+ days into a rally attempt. A William O'Neil signal that a new uptrend may be starting.
R-Multiple
A trade's profit or loss measured in multiples of initial risk. If you risked $100 and made $300, that's a +3R trade. Tracking R-multiples rather than dollars makes your results comparable across position sizes.
VCP (Volatility Contraction Pattern)
A pattern where a stock's price range contracts over successive pullbacks, forming a tightening consolidation before a breakout. Minervini's preferred setup for momentum entries.
Stage Analysis
Stan Weinstein's framework dividing a stock's price action into four stages: 1) basing, 2) advancing, 3) topping, 4) declining. Momentum traders focus on Stage 2 breakouts.
Float
The number of shares available for public trading (excluding insider-held shares). Low-float stocks can move violently on relatively small volume. High-float stocks need institutional participation to move.

How to Make Money in Stocks

The CANSLIM methodology. Where RS ratings and the market breadth concepts came from. Foundational reading for understanding how institutional money flows through the market.
Reminiscences of a Stock Operator
Edwin Lefèvre
A fictionalized biography of Jesse Livermore, written in 1923, still the best book on trading psychology ever published. The setups change; human nature doesn't.
The Perfect Speculator
Brad Koteshwar
An overlooked gem about discipline, position sizing, and the mental game of trading momentum stocks. Short, dense, and painfully honest about what it takes.
Stan Weinstein's Secrets for Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets
Stan Weinstein
The definitive guide to stage analysis. Old-school technical analysis that still works because it's based on human behavior patterns that never change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ScanInsight for?
ScanInsight is a market scanning, breadth analysis, and trade journaling platform built specifically for momentum swing traders. It's designed for people trading US stocks on daily/weekly timeframes, not for options, crypto, forex, or day trading alerts.
How often is data updated?
The universe engine runs continuously throughout the trading day — pre-market, every couple of hours intraday, after the close, and overnight — so RS ratings, % above MAs, scans, and fundamentals are always reflecting the latest bars rather than yesterday's snapshot. Catalyst detection runs every 2 minutes during market hours. Earnings Intel pulls from SEC EDGAR continuously.
Can I build my own scans?
Yes. The custom scan builder lets you combine 100+ filters — returns, volume, ADR, ATR, RS rating, market cap, float, sector, industry, and more — to build your own criteria. Save them and reuse.
How does the trade journal work?
Import trades via CSV export from any of 25+ supported brokers (Schwab, IBKR, Webull, Robinhood, Fidelity, Alpaca, Tastytrade, TradeStation, Tradier, E*TRADE, Ally, Moomoo, Lightspeed, DAS Trader, TradeZero, and more). Tag each trade with setups, playbooks, emotions, and rule violations. Get full analytics: equity curve, R-multiple distribution, day/hour heatmaps, Kelly Criterion sizing, Monte Carlo simulation, behavioral pattern detection, setup performance, streak tracking, and drawdown analysis.
Is this financial advice?
No. ScanInsight surfaces market data. You make trading decisions. Nothing on the platform constitutes financial advice or a recommendation to buy/sell any security. See our
Risk Disclaimer for details.
